Google announces an Operating System

Yesterday Google swept the Blogosphere with an announcement:
A new operating system.
Named Google Chrome OS, the OS will not be a remix of the Android operating system as some have speculated but based off the Google Chrome Browser and optimized for the web. The Google Chrome OS will be a “open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks.”

This, no doubt, will make competition between Microsoft and Google more intence as Google is already cutting into Microsoft’s sales of Office with its free Google Docs. Furthermore, the sale of Windows XP on new netbooks is already cutting into Microsoft’s potential gains and if that were taken away with Google’s new OS which is intially directed to netbooks; Microsoft will be fighting with all their might to keep their marketshare.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.

Google Excutives told the New York Times that the Chrome OS will be released later this year as a free online download. The new OS will be a “Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel”. And developers will breathe a sigh of relief as “the web is the platform.”
